Details
The ‘Mayo Action for Heart Disease and Stroke’ programme is a community extension of the work being undertaken by the Irish charity Croi at its heart and stroke facility in Galway. Croi, the West of Ireland Cardiac Foundation was founded in 1985 to support the development of cardiac services and facilities in the West and redress the inequity of access to cardiac care experienced by people living on the West Coast of Ireland. Croi has been leading the way in Ireland in developing and delivering prevention and recovery programs. The primary aim of the ‘Mayo Action for Heart Disease and Stroke’ program is to take prevention, early detection and education into the community, particularly rural and remote areas of County Mayo.

Croi is seeking support to deliver a stroke prevention initiative across County Mayo with particular focus on the farming community living in rural or isolated parts of the county. The funds will be used to engage a Nurse Specialist who, over a 12 month period, will screen up to 500 for Hypertension (high blood pressure) and Atrial Fibrilation (an irregular heartbeat which can cause a devastating stroke). The funds will be used to employ the nurse and to pay for some consumables. The tests/consultation will be provided free of charge to the participant.
